Treatment for Mood Disorders

What Are Mood Disorders?

Mood disorders are some of the most common mental health problems. Also called affective disorders, mood disorders generally refer to mental health conditions that cause a chronic or underlying change in a person’s mood or demeanor. These changes can either be manic, characterized by feelings of elation or arousal, or depressive, characterized by a low mood and a loss of interest. The Mental Health Center at Destination Hope offers treatment for a variety of mood disorders, including depression, anxiety, bipolar disorders, PTSD & Trauma, and eating disorders.

Mood disorders are not acute, meaning they are not temporary or short lived. People suffering from a mood disorder will have a persistent change in their emotional state, which does not go away after a few days. Research has shown that mood disorders disproportionally effect women and are most likely to onset around 30 years of age. We treat people of all ages, all backgrounds and of both genders for mood disorders.

Our Mood Disorder Programs

Mood disorders are very treatable, and many people live a healthier life after proper treatment. Mood Disorders like depression, anxiety and bipolar disorders are often treated through a combination of psychotherapy (verbal counseling) and medication. Effective treatment for a mood disorder must address not only the symptoms, but also the psychological, biological, and interpersonal causes of the disorder.

We offer two different mental health disorder tracks of treatment, one for mood disorders such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorders and eating disorders and one for thought disorders like schizoaffective, schizophrenia and post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Offering two separate tracks allows us to better tailor our treatment teams to the unique needs of each type of disorder. It enhances the ability of our clients to openly discuss their feelings and make progress in their recovery.

Family Involvement in Mood Disorders

Family therapy plays an important role in treating mood disorders, as these disorders commonly impact the entire family unit. Just as a disorder affects the whole family, so does treatment. Our family therapy counselors can help individuals and their families learn the coping skills and disorder management skills needed in order to improve their quality of life. We focus on developing a support network for our clients that extends beyond the treatment center and includes their family and loved ones.
