Understanding Mental Health Disorders
Mental health disorders and mental illness occur in all populations, geographic areas, genders, races and socio-economic levels. According to the National Institute of Mental Health 26.2 % of Americans over the age of 18 suffer from a mental disorder in any given year. That is more than a quarter of the population. Mental health disorders, like depression and bipolar disorders are the leading cause of disability in the U.S. and Canada. It is not uncommon for an individual to suffer from multiple mental health disorders at one time, making it critical for an individual to seek professional, qualified and specialized mental health treatment.
The Sylvia Brafman Mental Health Center recognizes that mental health disorders can make it difficult to live a normal, healthy life. We provide treatment and ongoing care for individuals suffering from a variety of mood and thought disorders. Our treatment programs include an individualized care plan, which the client has an integral role in creating. Our mental health treatment protocols include the most modern behavior and psychotherapy recovery opportunities.
As a specialized mental health treatment center, the Sylvia Brafman Mental Health Center offers four specialty tracks of mental health treatment, Mood Disorders, Thought Disorders, Dual Diagnosis, and Trauma & PTSD ensuring that patients receive specialized attention and care from our treatment teams.
Mood disorders occur when the body experiences hyper-sensitized emotions. It is normal to feel, sad, anxious, frightened or upset, but when these feelings get in the way of your daily routine and activities, you may be suffering from a mood disorder. Designed to help individuals suffering from mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorders, eating disorders, trauma and post traumatic stress disorder(PTSD) and self-esteem and self-worth issues, our Mood Disorder track is specially designed to treat the underlying or longitudinal emotional state. Mental health treatment, especially when dealing with mood disorders, requires a holistic and comprehensive approach. Clients can expect to discuss the inclusion of behavioral therapy, group therapy, psychotherapy (talk therapy), music therapy, art therapy, as well as pharmaceutical therapies in their treatment program. Many individuals who seek treatment for mood disorders benefit from wellness therapies, like exercise and meditation.
Thought disorders are a different type of mental health disorder and require different mental health treatment. An individual suffering from a thought disorder will have significant problems with thinking, feelings, and behavior. They may have delusions, experience emotions that do not match a situation, experience personality changes, speak incomprehensibly or even see or hear things that are not there. Some people suffering from thought disorders are unable to recognize or are not aware of their behavior. Common thought disorders include: schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder. Individuals seeking treatment for thought disorders can expect to discuss psychosocial treatments and other psychotherapy, illness management skill treatment, medication management, and cognitive behavioral therapy.
